Meilily: Michelle Obama on the Cover of Vogue March 2009

The March 2009 issue of Vogue Magazine features an historic and inspirational cover photograph of First Lady Michelle Obama, photographed by Annie Leibovitz.  Looking relaxed, confident and real in the cover photograph, Michelle Obama is poised and calm in repose, wearing a beautiful magenta silk dress by Jason Wu.

It just might be true that Michelle Obama really is “the First Lady the world’s been waiting for” as Vogue Magazine has dubbed her.  Michelle Obama, who can pull off wearing both designer fashions as well as off-the-rack clothing from J. Crew and White House | Black Market, does not come across as stiff or guarded as First Ladies sometimes can.  We just can’t seem to get enough of First Lady Michelle Obama’s reachable style and down-to-earth presence.

Moreover, if the Michelle Obama March Vogue cover is any indication, this spring we are in for a treat, recession or not.  I expect that magentas, fuscias, and wines will be fashionable shades for spring, and that Taiwanese designer Jason Wu, who also designed Michelle Obama’s white Inaugural Ball gown, will be in demand everywhere.

Michelle Obama has not surprisingly also been featured recently on the cover of People Magazine and on the upcoming April 2009 cover of O, The Oprah Magazine, and I’m sure there are many more covers to come.  It is pretty refreshing to have a First Lady who can represent both openness and change, two things we all might need right now.  A successful woman in her own right, Michelle Obama was working as an attorney when she and Barack Obama met.  Thus Michelle Obama also represents strength as an individual and as a spouse to America’s first African-American President.

Leave it to Vogue to bring us this little bit of sunshine in the midst of an economic downturn that even the Lipstick Index can’t withstand.  The March 2009 issue of Vogue also features articles on several other strong and powerful women such as Melinda Gates of the Gates Foundation and Queen Rania of Jordan.
