First Post

As with first dates, first posts are somewhat awkward and nerve-wracking, yet extremely hopeful – filled with the hope that all of those grand schemes and quiet desires will come to fruition.

Do I have arugula in my teeth? How do I look? Uh oh, awkward lull in the conversation – help!

To break the ice, or at least chip away at it, let me tell you about one of my internet “first dates.”

My very first online purchase

Back in the day of shrieking modems and questionable dial-up connections, I got up the nerve to go online and purchase something from the vast unknown that was “the world wide web.” The first object of my online affections? Luxury French lingerie, a Chantilly lace bra by Lise Charmel to be exact (purchased from sandrine.com). Well, I went for it and discovered the beauty of online shopping and the luxury of nice European lingerie all at once.

The USD$109 that I spent on my first online purchase opened my eyes to a wide beautiful world of possibilities, and not just material ones. It also opened my eyes to the many pitfalls of this internet age and the world of online shopping, online lingerie shopping in particular.

That fancy first date of a bra? It didn’t fit quite right, was a half-size too loose, and was not the ethereal pale blue color of unicorn butterflies that I had envisioned it to be, given the online photos. Hmmm. Reminds me a lot of those eHarmony dates my friends had. (Hm? Oh, that? I thought I deleted that profile?).

Since then, I have learned a lot more about navigating the online world, and now enjoy finding ways to do so somewhat gracefully (a.k.a. avoid embarassing pitfalls). In the end, the internet – a.k.a. the world as we know it – is constantly changing and evolving, so I look forward to many more first dates and hopefully to many second and third dates…
