Meilily Product Review: Julep Glow in the Dark Nail Polish – Nicola! Does it really glow?
Whether it’s that time of year when the sky glows orange, leaves fall, and we plan elaborate costumes, or whether it’s just time for a fun club night, nothing catches our attention like stuff that glows in the dark. Glow sticks, glow paint, and now glow in the dark nail polish!
Check out these photos and swatches for the lo-down on Julep’s Nicola glow in the dark nail polish!
The Nail Color
Julep’s Nicola is described on the Julep site as an “Orange glow-in-the-dark iridescent microglitter top coat. Charge it up in the light for maximum glow after dark.”
In person, Nicola is definitely a sheer polish with a decent amount of iridescent and orange microglitter. The orange is actually very subtle and appears quite neutral when layered over a bright white polish like Brigitte. (See photos.) This glow in the dark top coat is sheer enough for the office used alone, or gently build-able used over other polishes.
Used over a single layer of white polish (shown here with Julep Brigitte), Julep’s sheer Nicola glow in the dark top coat looks like a subtle peachy beige microglitter polish. Even when applied in three layers, this mistake-proof polish looks very sheer.
The Glow in the Dark
This Julep polish does glow… albeit very softly, and in very dark conditions (after exposure to sufficient light beforehand), for just a short time. As you can see here, there is a slight glow in very low light, with the exposure pumped up a bit.
If you’re looking for an intense glow, this isn’t the glow in the dark nail polish for you. If you think layering it on will help, Julep Nicola glow in the dark top coat glows pretty much the same when applied over a white polish or applied in more layers. Charging it up in sunlight also still produces just a subtle glow.
Nicola is overall a very pretty softly shimmering top coat for any occasion that happens to glow a little in the dark.
How Does it Glow?
While we’re not experts in glow in the dark materials, it looks like Julep’s glow in the dark nail polish works by phosphorescence, where an ingredient in the nail polish absorbs light and re-emits it later (the “glow”).
