Lipstick Queen: New Chinatown Glossy Pencils

Why I haven’t written about Lipstick Queen products yet, I don’t know!
Available at high-end department store Barneys New York, the Lipstick Queen cosmetics line by Poppy King seems to have developed from a mixture of luxury noir glamour and tongue-in-cheek vision.  (The line first become known for its fascinating Saint and Sinner lipsticks, light and intense versions of the same lipstick shade.)

Now, the latest example of why Lipstick Queen products so effectively capture our imagination is their new product, the Chinatown Glossy Pencil, inspired by both the Roman Polanski film, Chinatown, and also by New York’s Chinatown.  The minute I found out that the pencil has “Lipstick Queen” written on it in Chinese, I knew I had to try it!

The Lipstick Queen Chinatown Glossy Pencils currently come in 5 bright-but-sheer colors, and these jumbo pencils even come with their own sharpener.

Chinatown Glossy Pencil Shade Descriptions According to the Lipstick Queen Website:
Crime – sheer hot pink
Mystery- sheer vibrant purple
Thriller – sheer scarlet red
Genre – sheer bright orange
Chase – sheer lush watermelon

I was lucky enough to get to try the new Chinatown Glossy Pencil in Chase (“Chinatown Chase“), a sheer bright red shade that can be layered for more color.   Strangely enough the actual pencil I got looks nothing like the “sheer lush watermelon” in the official product photo, though it is labeled “Chase.”  To me the pencil looks like a bright slightly-orange-red color, but I suppose it could pass for watermelon-red when applied on the lips.

The box the Glossy Pencils come in even features a black and white illustrated scene from the film, which makes you really believe that this is one interesting lip pencil!  (The illustrated scene on the box of Chinatown Chase Glossy Pencil looks like a car chase scene, with a car flying in midair.)  Fun!

All in all, these pencils are definitely sheer fragrance-free gloss pencils with decent staying power, and I’d love to try more shades.
